Food should provide energy and nourishment, and yet after eating some foods, we feel heavy, sleepy or just nauseous. For many, indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux are a common phenomenon; why does this happen even if we supposedly eat healthy food.
Have you ever considered that the combination of foods that you are eating could be causing these problems? Foods are responsible for maintaining the overall energy of the body and everything relates back to the three doshas – Vata, pitta, and Kapha that are present in every human being. Eating the right foods ensures that your doshas stay balanced preventing you from suffering from food related concerns.
The wrong kinds of food combinations affect digestion and cause fermentation, indigestion, putrefaction, and gas. This results in excessive production of ‘Ama’ or toxins, and prolonged exposure to these toxins creates diseases in the body. Here are some bad food combinations according to Ayurveda.
Dairy and Meat
Many people love their Alfredo pasta with chicken, or butter garlic shrimp, and cheesy bacon nachos. This is a huge no-no. This combination may taste divine but just does not sit well in the stomach. Next time you eat out or prepare a fancy meal, stay away from mixing these two.
Fruits and Other Foods
Fruits should be had in the morning before you eat anything else. Eating fruits after other meals cause these meals to ferment in your G-I tract. This eventually leads to gas and acidity. A lot of people like to have fruit in their cereal, and the health benefits of this combination have been well marketed by the food industry. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Eat your fruits first thing in the morning, wait for at least two hours before you eat anything else.
Honey
Never ever heat your honey. So having honey in your green tea is a bad idea, even though many people may tell you otherwise. When honey is heated, it becomes toxic which is bad for your digestion. The human body does not require a lot of sugar and the best way to get those natural sugars is through fruits. This will ensure you stay healthy, and you won’t have any sugar cravings. And it’s good for the bees.
Hot and Cold Foods
Do you know how we love having that sizzling brownie with ice cream? It may taste amazing, but it is certainly not good for your digestion. When you eat, the body prepares to digest and heat is created in the body to allow this process to take place, however, when you drink cold water or have a cold yogurt along with your meal, the fire (agni), or heat gets extinguished. This means the digestion process remains incomplete and food ferments in the stomach causing gas, and other problems.
Fruits and Dairy
Dairy is not a good food group for adults anyway and if you can avoid it, you should. Most adults are lactose intolerant and don’t even know it; all they know is they have a lot of gas and acidity. This happens because the body cannot break down the lactose. Combining milk with fruits in the form of yogurt, smoothies, or milkshakes is not a healthy option at all. Not only are you putting lactose into your intolerant body, but you are mixing another food group with fruits, which is also not great as we’ve mentioned in point two. Store bought fruit yogurt doesn’t contain any real fruit and is not a healthy option at all, as some may want you to believe, because it contains preservatives, artificial flavors, colors, and a whole of sugar which is extremely harmful to your body.
