Kidney stones, as the name suggests, is a medical condition is which dissolved minerals get accumulated on the inner linings of the kidney. In most cases, kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate. They have a sharp crystalline structure and can grow up to the size of a golf ball.

In several cases, kidney stones are small and can pass through the urinary tract but causes extreme pain while doing so. When kidney stones remain inside the body, several complications start to occur. Some of the health complications include blockage of the ureter and increased risk of chronic kidney disease.

Causes of kidney stones

The main cause of kidney stones is lack of enough water in the body. When the kidneys don’t get enough water to dilute the uric acid, the acidity level of the urine increases. And when the urine becomes acidic, it favours the condition for formation of kidney stones.

Other common causes include:

  • Diet
  • Heredity
  • Medications

Symptoms of kidney stones

Symptoms of kidney stones become apparent when the stones move into the ureter. Some of the common symptoms of kidney stones include:

  • Blood in urine
  • Fever and chills
  • Persistent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Vomiting and nausea
